  • Sore Throat

I have a sore throat today.

Am a bit worried that it might be the first (or second) sign that I'm getting a cold...

I can't decide whether I should cancel my singing lesson on Saturday just in case.

Trouble is - on the one hand, I'd really like a lesson (there are lots of things I'd like to work on and it's been two weeks since the last one already), but on the other, it would be a bit of a waste of time/money if I'm all miserable and voiceless by then...

I could wait and see, but if I cancel today, I only have to pay for the studio time, and if I leave it till tomorrow, I'd have to pay for the whole lesson (and hence might as well go and get whatever I can out of it).

Life is filled with these hard decisions ;-)

On the bright side, though, it's Thursday, which is *most definitely* a good thing!

  • Beautiful Day

    Hello everyone :-)

I've been totally infected by the lovely crispy blue sky and the sunshine today and am in an, otherwise inexplicably, good mood!
The good mood has so far been good enough to eclipse my tiredness after foolishly late cinema trip last night, the fact that there was a minor screwup (not mine) today which meant redoing the morning's work (in extreme haste, so as to meet daily deadlines) and the apparent reluctance of anyone in my department to reply to my v important email, even though it's marked *v important*...

I am further cheered by the fact that I can see my flat out of the window from my desk at work - I moved to this desk quite a few months ago, and have not yet lost the frisson that comes from recognising our own little rooftop in the distance!
This has no practical application, of course, and is too far away to see anything of any consequence, but it's nice all the same.

I went to see the Sweeney Todd film with my parents and LBF last night with some trepidation, but, apart from LBF denying me access to his fizzy cola bottles, really enjoyed myself.
The singing was, as predicted, pretty poor, but the film was very pretty and there was lots of lovely melodramatic gore, which pretty much made up for it.
I even managed not to sing along (well, not toomuch anyway) other than silently, so hopefully didn't drive other audients too crazy!

I hope everyone else is having a nice day too and that some of you are allowed out to frolic in the sunshine properly (as opposed to just nipping out to Pret for five minutes at lunchtime - sometimes I'm a bit jealous of the smokers, who get to bask in the glorious outsidity of outside often...) and I'll leave you with the happy news that my 2.30 meeting just has been cancelled, so I'm free to do some real work instead!

  • Philosophical Musings.....?

    And so it's Tuesday.

Generally speaking, Tuesday is my least favourite day of the week - it doesn't have any of the shiny-new-weekness of Monday, or the half-way-through-and-over-the-humpness of Wednesday. Thursday, which is my best day, I think, is always particularly good because of the frisson of almost-Fridayness, compared to which, Friday seems a little bit (only a very little bit, mind) of a let down...
The weekend is the weekend, of course, and so doesn't really qualify for comparison as would be unfair on the other days to include something that is so clearly not in the same league - a bit like comparing, say, Arsenal to Partick Thistle, or perhaps, on a more foodworthy note, supermarket chocolate mousse (that comes in one of those little plastic four-packs, where you peel off the lid and eat with a teaspoon) with a delicious French restaurant creme brulee - both good in their own way, but not really a fair comparison...
Anyway - poor old Tuesday - it just doesn't really have any redeeming features at all - the whole long working week is stretched out ahead of you and there's no way to ease the pain :-(

Today, though, doesn't actually seem too bad - we're off to see the Sweeney Todd film tonight, which should hopefully be fun, though I'm a little bit wary of seeing a show which I know-and-love so very well performed by non-singers...

So (perhaps you can tell...) not much has really happened to me since the last post - my LBF thinks that I shouldn't be talking about things that have happened anyway, but instead, entertaining you all with my Philosophical Musings.
    I'm not so sure...

  • That Monday feeling...

So it's back to work today after a lovely weekend of relaxation, haggis and debauchery ;-)

Anyone who read my blog on Friday will know that we were looking forward to at least two Burns Night suppers, both of which went pretty well.

I successfully managed to execute a yummyberry mousse (for between 6 and 20 people, as requested) on Friday night, which held its own against the mountain of haggis, neeps and tatties and the veritable lake of whisky on offer...

The various members of my household (well, my boyfriend mainly - the kittens and I were fine) recovered from their hangovers (assisted by Hendricks martinis - v Scottish) on Saturday in time to create our own (smaller and marginally less boozy) Burns dinner, which was also pretty tasty! I can thoroughly recommend MacSweens individual postion haggises (v cute) and the addition of cabbage to the mash was inspired (even if I do say so myself!)

I had a lovely time at the Islington farmers' market on Sunday morning - spent way too much money, but am now the proud owner of lots of delicious vegetables and, until last night, pigeon breasts...

And now I'm back at work - *sighs*

I guess it couldn't last forever!

  • Happy Burns Night everyone!

    Tonight is Burns night.
As my lovely boyfriend is Scottish and quite enthusiastic, we will be celebrating with a weekend of haggis, whisky and debauchery.
Tonight we are going to LBF's brother's flat for dinner - my part in this is to make Scottish themed dessert for a vague and unspecific number of people...
I'm not sure that I've done very well, actually...
After racking (or possibly wracking?) brains and frantically googling, I am forced into the conclusion that cranachan is the only feasible Scottish dessert (deep fried mars bars not practical at all!) and, given that I'm making that for my own Burns night dinner tomorrow, not what I wanted to do, I plumped for raspberry mousse...
After all, raspberries are fairly Scottish and I *did* put some Hendricks in it!
It's not quite finished yet - am planning to finalise tonight after work and before we go round there - but it does look quite good.
Though, now that I have time to reflect on it properly, not that unlike cranachan really...
Still - I expect everyone will have eaten enough haggis, neeps and tatties not to really want any and drunk enough whisky not to care anyway!

Happy Burns Night to you all - hope you have fun with your Great chieftains o' the puddin-race!

  • First blog posting...

Hello and welcome to my blog...

I'm not sure what this is going to be about yet - I don't think that the minutiae of my life are necessarily very interesting to anyone who isn't me - but I guess we'll see.

    THankyou for the welcome!
