They don't look like cookies, but the book assures me that they are - they're a chocolate and cashew based variation on 'tollhouse cookies' which are apparently the oldest American cookie recipe in the world!
EDIT: Yes - definitely cookies - scrunchy (though pleasantly chewy in the middle)...
